How much does it cost to add central air in Los Angeles?

Why older LA homes are the expensive case

A lot of the housing stock across Burbank, Glendale, and the San Fernando Valley went up in the 1940s–60s and was heated by a wall furnace, a floor furnace, or gravity heat — systems with no ductwork at all. Homeowners assume "adding AC" means bolting on a condenser. In these houses it means building an entire duct system into a home that was never designed for one: finding a spot for the air handler (attic, a furred-down closet, or the garage), running insulated supply and return ducts, cutting in registers, and frequently opening plaster ceilings to do it.

That labor — not the condenser sitting outside — is where the budget goes. It is the same lesson as any older-home project: the equipment is the cheap part.

What you are actually paying for

On a ducted retrofit, roughly: equipment (condenser plus air handler and coil) 30–40%, ductwork 25–40%, electrical 10–15%, permit and Title 24 compliance about 10%, with labor threaded through all of it. Notice the split — on a house that already has good ducts, the ductwork line nearly disappears and the job lands at the bottom of the range. On a house with none, it is the largest single line.

The two hidden costs people miss

The electrical panel. A new AC compressor is a real load, and a 100-amp panel that already runs the house often cannot take it. This is the most common surprise in a postwar remodel: the AC quote is fine, but the panel has to be upgraded first. Title 24 energy-code verification. Do you need a permit?

Yes — a mechanical permit from LADBS, or your city's building department, for a new central AC where none existed. The permit is also what triggers the energy-code verification above. It is tempting to skip on a "quick" install, but unpermitted HVAC is a classic escrow problem, and an unverified system that fails a duct-leakage test later is a bill you pay twice.

The ductless alternative

If your house has no ducts and the attic won't easily take them, don't assume central air is your only option. A ductless mini-split puts an air handler on the wall of each zone and runs only a small refrigerant line back to the outdoor unit — no duct construction, no opened ceilings. For a smaller home, a converted garage, or a room addition, it is frequently the cheaper and faster path, and it lets you cool the rooms you use instead of the whole house.

How to not get surprised

Before you commit, have a licensed contractor do three things: run a load calculation (Manual J) so the system is sized right, open the electrical panel to see if it can carry the AC, and check attic clearance to see whether ducts even fit. Those three checks predict most of the cost surprises.
