How much does a bathroom remodel cost in Los Angeles?

A mid-range bathroom remodel in Los Angeles costs $25,000 to $45,000 and takes 4 to 7 weeks on site. A guest or hall bath with the same layout runs $15,000 to $25,000. A primary suite with a relocated shower, double vanity, and stone slabs runs $50,000 to $90,000 and up. Square footage barely matters here — what matters is whether the plumbing moves and what is hiding behind the tile.

The three real price bands

$15,000 – $25,000 — guest or hall bath, same layout. New tub or shower insert, tile surround, vanity, toilet, fixtures, paint, exhaust fan. Nothing moves. This is the fastest and most predictable job in remodeling.

$25,000 – $45,000 — the mid-range remodel. Tub converted to a walk-in shower, new pan and waterproofing, relocated or upgraded plumbing, new electrical, custom tile, quartz top, better fixtures. Permits required. This is where most Los Angeles bathrooms land.

$50,000 – $90,000+ — the primary suite. Layout redrawn, double vanity, freestanding tub, curbless shower, slab stone, heated floors, niche lighting, sometimes a wall moved or a window added.

Where the money goes

Labor is roughly half. Tile and stone 15–20%. Plumbing fixtures and the shower system 10–15%. Vanity and cabinetry 10%. Electrical, ventilation, and lighting 5–8%. Permits, a few hundred to a couple of thousand depending on the city.

People fixate on the faucet. The faucet is not what moved the number. Moving the drain is.

The part that breaks budgets

Waterproofing. It is invisible, it is not glamorous, and it is the single most important line item in the room. A shower is a box designed to hold water in a house designed to keep water out. Skimp on the pan, the membrane, or the slope, and you are paying for the same bathroom twice — plus the ceiling below it.

If a bid does not name the waterproofing system, ask which one it is. Then ask who warranties it.

Timeline

Four to seven weeks on site for a standard remodel. Add two to four weeks up front for design, selections, and permits. Custom vanities and specialty tile have lead times — order them before demolition, not after, or you will have a finished room waiting three weeks on a mirror.

Why does a small bathroom cost almost as much as a big one?

Because a bathroom is the densest room in the house. A 40 sq ft bathroom and a 90 sq ft bathroom both need a shower pan, waterproofing, plumbing, electrical, ventilation, tile, and a vanity. The extra 50 square feet adds tile and floor — a few thousand dollars. The fixtures, the labor, and the trades are nearly identical.

What is the most common surprise in a Los Angeles bathroom?

Water damage behind the shower. In houses built before the 1980s, the original pan or the mortar bed has usually failed somewhere, and the studs behind it are soft. You do not know until demolition. Set aside 10–15% of the budget as a contingency and you will sleep better.

Is it worth doing a bathroom in phases to spread the cost?

Almost never. The trades come in a fixed sequence — demo, plumbing, electrical, waterproofing, tile, finish. Splitting that across months means paying each trade to mobilize twice, and it usually costs more than doing it once, not less.
